The title of the exhibition is Semiosis. The word refers to a cognitive activity that enables us to create and observe signs. Anything can be a sign; for instance, the color blue on a map signifies oceans and bodies of water. Looking around the exhibition, we see subtle signs in every picture: fragments of letters, scraps of maps, and much more.
The works on display here were created over a period of five years. What they have in common is that they are paper-based, with colored threads winding across them. The white wallpaper I used as a base features embossed patterns. It is onto these that I stitched colored lines and signs. I wouldn’t call it embroidery; I prefer to describe the process as drawing with thread. At times, I sought to hide or obscure the original forms. At other times, I emphasized the embossed pattern. This duality of concealment and revelation also characterizes my earlier works.
